Road Trip?

I realize that we just went on a cruise in December. But I'm still obsessed with traveling, so I'm already anxious to plan our next trip. I've decided that we should take our first big 2010 trip in June, mainly because that's when my contract with ME ends. (Of course, I'm hoping they'll offer me a permanent position, and that would be great cause I could start right after our trip. Fingers crossed!) Now, I just decided this today, so things are definitely in the very beginning planning stages (What can I say? I'm a planner!) but I think a trip to the Northeast might be fun. I've been wanting to get back to NYC for a long time, and would love to re-visit Boston, DC, and also go to lots of places I've never been.
I started perusing Google Maps today, trying to decide a route (an extremely tentative route) and I realized I need help. I have no idea what/where to visit in lots of these states. Like West Virginia for example. And Ohio. What are the big tourist attractions there? Do we do something outdoorsy, like hiking, or are there cool museums or zoos? I have no clue! So I need suggestions. If you know any cool "must see's" for the places I list, let me know. Cities, landmarks, anything will help!
1. First stop, Garden of the Gods, Illinois (Mark said its really cool, so we'll start there)
2. Next stop, Kentucky somewhere (Louisville?)
3. Somewhere in Ohio, next (Cincinnati? Toledo? Dayton?)
4. Indiana (Indianapolis?)
5. Chicago, Illinois - I've never been but can't wait! This is likely the first place we'll stay 2-3 days.
6. Michigan (Detroit? Grand Rapids?)
7. Niagra Falls
8. Toronto, Canada
9. Montreal, Canada
10. Quebec, Canada
11. Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine
12. Boston, Mass
13. Providence, Rhode Island
14. New Canaan, Connecticut (where I lived when I was a nanny!)
15. NYC! I can't wait to return! (Don't need any suggestions, here, unless you know of some place/thing that's totally unusual.)
16. New Jersey
17. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
18. Delaware
19. Baltimore, Maryland
20. DC
21. Virginia
22. And finally West Virginia
Sounds fun, right? Think we can do it in 3 weeks? I might have some serious editing to do, but right now I'm just excited to start planning!

How fun! I hope poor Mark's back can take all that driving. I'm so glad to hear you got a new job! Sounds like the year is off to a good start! Now get your lazy butt to the gym, slack ass:)

I remember some random place in West Virginia from our drives across the country. I think it is called Wisconsin Delles(??) and a lot of people drive around in monster trucks there. How much help was that? ;)

Um, hello? Church sites! Palmyra, Sharon, Kirtland ... go there!

You'd think a college grad would know the difference between Wisconsin and West Virginia. I've actually only driven through the corner of WV and obviously it made a big impact on my memory. Let me know how it is there. I feel that i owe WV another chance.

HOLY LONG ROAD TRIP!! You know Boston was freaking sweet when we were there so you have to go to Martha's. We have good friends in Ohio so I can ask them. And we also have friends in Virginia. What can I a say ... we are really freaking popular. :)

Definitely talk to Jennie about Chicago, but I say take the boat tour. In Rhode Island, make sure you hit the mansions, and if the timing is right-check out Water Fire in Providence, it's incredible.

My BF lives in Ohio. There's a lot of church history there as well as great outdoorsy stuff. She lived near columbus...
Anyway - Holy Long Road Trip! I'm jealous! Sounds like a whirlwind of a trip & uber fun!!!

Ok, I don't know how close your Canadian destinations are to Lake Louise, or to Edmonton...but if you're anywhere near either of those two, you need to go! Lake Louise is GORGEOUS! And there is a nice hotel sitting right on the lake. And Edmonton has the biggest mall in the world! It's pretty freaking amazing!

Somewhere in Ohio is Abe Lincolns home. You could stop at an Amish community in Ohio or Indiana too. Indianapolis is a smaller city. They have a canal that runs through the city that is a site seeing place and you could go to the motor speedway and see where the Indy 500 takes place.
For Chicago I would recommend 3 days if you plan on going to the museums. They have great museums and they really take a lot of time. The two things I wish I had done but didn't were the architectural boat tour and the Art Institute Museum next to the park with the giant "bean". I would stay close to Michigan Ave. (Magnificent Mile)I would recommend renting bikes and going along Lake Michigan too. Soo much to do in Chicago. In Virginia George Washington's home in Mount Vernon is awesome and Alexandria is cool too. LaLona could help you out with Louisville.

Fun trip!

Oooh, yes, come to Boston and I will play tour guide! There's so much to see and do here. I've always wanted to go to Montreal though, so I'm glad to see that on your list! Vermont is ok, Sharon is where JS was born, and Maine is great, but I don't think there's much to do in NH, which just means more time in Boston! :)

scI KNOW you like to drive without potty breaks but really you've got a pretty formidable agenda there, kiddo. My Mom was born in Springfield, IL that's where your Dad and I went summer 2008. We really liked the Lincoln Presidential Museum. It's supposed to be the best of all of the Pres. museums and is pretty new. My mom's cousin's wife gave us a personal tour. She and her husband worked in state gov't. She might be able to do the same for you. More later...

I'm still mad you'll go to all those places but not Boulder. Are you THAT scared of hippies?
